Some of the Pigeon Fanciers of the Horse and Jockey Club"

1947

I joined the Horse and Jockey in 1951 in partnership with John Beavan; we co-owned the birds - between 40 and 50. We won the Morennes Cup. John worked for the Horse and Jockey.

There were two pigeon clubs in Buckley; at the Horse and Jockey and the Black Horse. There was land racing and channel racing. In the 1950s the longest race was just over 500 miles.

The birds were ringed. They were transported by road in covered trucks. There was a convoyer, who was in charge of the birds and who liberated the birds at the appointed places, eg. Craven Arms, Hereford, Frome.

Below is a list of race points I kept in my notebook:

Race Points Miles Yds

Craven Arms 51 775

Hereford 78 650

Monmouth 95 698

Severn Tunnel 110 1008

Dol 325 89

Pennes 355 1170
