GOLDEN WEDDING.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hayes, of 42, Burntwood, have just celebrated their golden wedding. They are natives of Buckley, where they have resided all their lifetime. They were married at Buckley St. Matthew's Church on 3rd December, 1852, by the Rev. W. Dampier who was the vicar at that time. They have had eleven children, nine are still living. Five were sons and six daughters. One of their sons is Mr C. W. Hayes, the Buckley, Tranmere, and Welsh International amateur fullback. Several of their grandsons are footballers, including the Burntwood goalkeeper and the inside-left, T. J. and Neville Catherall.

Mr. Hayes, who is 74 years of age, commenced working at the age of nine, at the old Ewloe Pottery, turning the potter's wheel. His father, the late Mr. Joseph Hayes, was the owner of the pottery at that time. Mr. Henry Hayes, his uncle, took over the pottery, which is still carried on by the Hayes family. Mr. C. Hayes, on leaving the pottery, went to work down the mine at the Little Mountain Colliery, then at Elm Colliery, and afterwards at other Buckley collieries. In all, he spent 40 years down the mines. For about ten years he has been employed at the Buckley Standard Pipe Works, where he is still working. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes have lived in the same house for the whole of their married life. Mrs. Hayes, who is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Read, of Drury, is 70 years of age.
