Gareth Mole, Mold Road and Robin Cropper, Lane End Post Office, both 17, were cadets in the Hawarden Air Training Corps squadron when they won an apprenticeship on an aeronautical engineering course with the Ministry of Defence after a rigorous selection process. They passed a written exam, an interview and a medical and were accepted on the four-year course at RAF St Athan, near Cardiff. 350 people from all over Britain applied for twelve places. They were the first from North Wales and two of only three air cadets to be selected for interview.

Hawarden ATC had just been awarded the Lees Trophy for being the top squadron in Britain.
