Caption for Howell Elfet Rowlands' orchestra"

1935

There are a number of text entries which include Howell Elfet Rowlands. Examples are at: 28.238, 28.243, 43.60 and 139.129. The following are undated excerpts from unknown newspapers and relate to Mr Rowlands.

At the Sunday evening orchestral concert there was a disappointing attendance. The bill of fare had improved, but the musical force had waned considerably. But the quality of what remains is good, and though now he is nearly limited to strings, Mr. Rowlands will not, I hope, give up in despair because orchestral concerts do not "take" in the nominal capital of the county. Perhaps here, too, an "annotated" form of the programme would be helpful, and might even stimulate a little interest. There are many charming works which might be presented by a string band. Mozart's "Serenade for strings" occurs to the mind; and why not some of the Bach Suites and the best known of the Brandenburg Concertos? Elgar is perhaps not yet "in sight", as it were, but Handel who never wrote for a large orchestra, might be given a "look in". We must have patience with the public, and there is hope in the thought that even Mold cannot long be uninfluenced by the "rising tide" which is spreading over Wales in favour of "orchestral music". Meanwhile we shall one day realise what we owe locally to men like Mr. Middleton and the leader of the Savoy Orchestra.

A FORMER MOLD MUSICIAN. - A letter has been received at the "Chronicle Office in Mold, from Mr. H. E. Rowlands, the former leader of the Savoy Orchestra, and now at Chinley, in Derbyshire. Mr. Rowlands recently had the honour to be included in the orchestra which provided the tenth concert programme of the Chapel-en-le-Frith and District Orchestral Society, when the "star" artist was Mr. Albert Sammons, who played in Mozart's concerto in G for violin and orchestra. Most of the players were Halle and Liverpool Philharmonic men, and Mr. Rowlands was the youngest member of the orchestra. It is interesting to note that the conductor of the orchestra, Mr. H. K. Sykes, is a son of the late Mr. Sykes, who formerly had a printing business in Mold. Since living in Derbyshire, Mr. Howell E. Rowlands has become the conductor of the Chapel-en-le-Frith Amateur Players, an enthusiastic body of amateurs whose orchestral playing has received great praise in the local press. Mr. Rowlands was the founder and first conductor of the Mold Symphony Orchestra.
