NB. The following account of The Old Parrot was written by Mr Jonathan in response to an enquiry.
The Old Parrot Public House and the Parry family who lived there
Information by Mr John Jonathan and Mrs Elona Parry
April 2010
Where Eli May's flower shop is on the opposite corner from The Parrot, there was a road which led to three houses, one of which was The Old Parrot. Behind them was the Drury Brickworks. Either side of the road leading to the pub were clay holes, now back-filled. The pub was also the room where the family lived. As a child I used to play with the sons in the cellar of The Old Parrot. The houses were demolished at the same time as Brook Street and the family moved to Meadow Avenue.
This photo is of the children of the Parry family who lived in The Old Parrot. The mother's name was Suzanne and there was two years between the births of each of the children.
There were three sons, George, Joe and Ted Parry and four daughters Betty, Mary, May and Amy.
George, the eldest son, married someone from Shotton (maiden name Bullock). He was getting ready to out to a dance at Ewloe Club when he collapsed and died. On his funeral certificate it stated that he was born at The Old Parrot. He and one of his sisters had an inherited eye condition.
Edward, a gardener, married Katherine Elona (nee, Parry and known as Elona). He suffered from heart trouble but survived this to die of cancer around 16 or 17 years ago.
Mary married someone from Manchester. She collapsed while driving a car and died at the wheel.
Joe married a Buckey girl. He was in hospital where he died from a heart attack.
Amy collapsed and died while cooking a meal.
There was also another pub called The Hare and Hounds between The Parrot and The Grandstand which belonged to Castle Hill Brewery, Ewloe. Bill Griffiths was the landlord.
