BUCKLEY TOWN COUNCIL

The Town Council is delighted to host the Sellers Engineering Band for

this Grand Finale Concert of the Council's Centenary Year Musical

Festival. The Council is very pleased also to welcome again the Town's

own Royal Buckley Town Band.

The Council has been delighted with the success of its Musical Festival

which has been a major part of the Centenary Year celebrations. Other

concerts have featured the internationally known Sirenian Singers, the

Buckley and District Choral Society and a special youth choir of some

300 voices drawn from all the schools within the town under the musical

directorship of Mr. Barry Smallwood. The Royal Buckley Town Band

is featuring now for the second time during the Centenary Year celebra-

tions. The Council offers its congratulations to the Band on its 175th.

Anniversary - a very remarkable achievement.

The Town Council would again like to thank the Buckley Elfed High

School for the use of its theatre this evening. The theatre has been the

focal point of the Centenary Year events and is becoming increasingly

a community theatre for the enhancement of the cultural life of the town.

The Town Council would like to place on record the invaluable assistance

given by Mr. Ken Lloyd, who has acted in the capacity of Festival Co-

ordinator. Ken, along with the people of Buckley, have ensured the

Musical Festival's success.

Councillor R.G. Hampson,

Town Mayor

ROYAL BUCKLEY TOWN BAND

Formed in 1822, the Royal Buckley Town Band is believed to be one of the oldest bands in the British Isles and is one of only two Bands who are proud to bear the "Royal" title. The actual date when this title was granted is unknown, but it is certain that we held it in 1894 - it was probably around the 1889/90 period that it was bestowed. The Band had played in Hawarden Castle before the then Prince and Princess of Wales (who later became King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra). The Home Office have confirmed that we are to continue with our "Royal" title.

This year has, therefore, been a very special time for the Band as it celebrates its 175th

Anniversary. To mark the occasion several events have taken place, including the erection of a weather-vane donated by two brothers who have achieved a collective 100 years of service as playing members. We have also re-enacted some of the Band's history by performing a Promenade Concert at Hawarden Castle (by kind permission of Sir William Gladstone the great-grandson of four times Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, who used to summon the Band to the Castle to entertain his guests.) In addition the Band recently took part in the Patronal Festival of St. Matthew's Parish Church, Buckley which was consecrated in 1822 and thus also celebrates its 175th. Anniversary.

The Band performs many charitable concerts, both locally and outside the area, and attends Civic and Armistice Parades. It also heads the Buckley Jubilee procession, carrying on a tradition spanning 141 years of unbroken service. In addition our Junior Band entertains Senior Citizens by carrying out varied engagements in its own right.

The Band acquired its own premises in 1985 and the various skills of our members were

utilised in a major reconstruction of the former Fire Station. During the past twelve months a further refurbishment bas been carried out with the assistance from the National Lottery, Wales.

The Band's Fund-raising group, helped by local businesses and the Public has recently provided our members with a new dress Uniform in this special year.

The Band is an active member of the Welsh Amateur Music Federation and National Brass Band Associations.

David Thomas - Conductor.

David was born of a musical family in Wrexham, North Wales. He started to play the

cornet at the age of 10 with the Gresford Colliery Band achieving the Principal cornet

position by the age of 13. He later moved to the City of Chester band and then Foden

Band before joining the Northop Band in 1987. During which time he played

Principal Comet, Flugel Horn and Soprano Cornet. For three years he was

administrator of the band and enjoyed eight of the most successful years in the history

of Northop Band.

David is the winner of many solo prizes and has won the North Wales Solo

Championships on numerous occasions, and he has toured Europe extensively.

Before being appointed Musical Director with the Royal Buckley Town Band, David

has enjoyed a successful period conducting Porthywaen Silver Band, winning many

competitions. He still plays and is a registered member of the Roberts Bakery Band.
