1911
This memorial plaque for little Jacob Griffiths was made at either Davison's or The Globe Brickworks. The text was smudged in the process of being made. The family grave is in Saint Matthew's Churchyard, Grave No. B900, Row 12, adjacent to the boundary wall with Etna Road underneath the oak tree.
Jacob lived with his parents and younger sister, my mother, on the site of Davison's Top Yard. Jacob had watched the men uncouple the waggons and one day he tried it for himself and was crushed beneath the moving stock. My mother, who was three at the time, having witnessed the accident, ran into the house to alert the parents but it was too late.
Also in the grave:
his mother, Mary, of Dovey's Croft, who died 26.2.1932 aged 55.
his father, Jacob who died 25.8.1944 aged 69.
the ashes of their daughter, Mary Elizabeth (died 25.1.1995) and her husband, John Mitchell (died 3.11.1967 aged 81)
