James Messham in the Family Pigeon Kit at Burntwood"

Burntwood, Buckley

1935

This is my father, James (Jim) Messham, in the family pigeon kit in Burntwood. He and his brothers shared the kit which was a wooden hut about 30 or 40 yards away from the thatched cottage. They had a long walk to the toilet which was called "the petty" (the collectors were called "petty officers" and disposed of the effluent in the adjoining field).
