David Roberts and Colleague with his Coal Cart and Horse"

Mill Lane, Buckley

1930

Mrs Elsie M. Dutton, nee Roberts

David Roberts, my uncle, was born 1875 and died 8.1946 aged 71.

He was one of nine children and married Alice Ann, nee Pennington, after he brought her back from service in Ireland: they had no children. They married in secret and she went to Ireland to work in service. During the 1901 census, he was living at home and confessed that instead of "batchelor" he should be recorded as "married". His mother then demanded that he bring her back home!

They lived in Lamb's Lane, then Church Road and then moved to Beavan's cottage at the back of The Feather's.

He worked at Mountain Colliery until he had his hand blown off while working; he had a

hook fitted to replace it. The compensation he received part-paid for the coal merchant's

business he then started, prior to WWII. They thought the world of the horse in the

photograph and it was very well looked after.

The building in the background between the horse and Mr Roberts is Saint John's Church.

The building behind the unknown man on the cart is Misses Messham's sweet shop in

Mill Lane.
