MY MOTHER AND FATHER
This is a photograph of Mr Albert Lewis, formerly of Church Road, and his wife, Edna, nee Wilcock. Mr Lewis was also known as Albert the Sweep because he swept a lot of chimneys in and around the Buckley area. He met his wife-to-be whilst sweeping the chimney at Dobshill Hospital when she worked there as cook and cleaner. In addition she worked for John and Geoffrey Summers in Willaston where she told me she cooked her first chicken. Albert and Edna were married at Saint Matthew's Church and then went to live at 40, Mold Road where they raised four children, David, Michael, Patricia and Bryan. There is a photograph on the archive of the Church Hall set out ready for the do afterwards.
Albert's normal job in his youth was as a labourer at John Summers' Steelworks in Shotton. He played football for the Buckley Engineers as well as for the works' team. In later life he was a committee member for Buckley Wanderers Football Team and on match days he would mark out the pitch, put up the nets etc. He also arranged bingo nights to raise funds. He raced pigeons for Bob Cruse who worked in the Albert Hall Snooker Hall.
The photographs I have donated to the archive are centred around 40, Mold Road, which was one of a row of cottages now demolished, near the Black Horse.
