JOSEPH HUGHES BARTLEY

 

Born 1899 in Nant Mawr, Buckley.

When he was six years old, the family moved to Padeswood Road.

There were five sisters and three brothers.

He attended the Board School, Padeswood Road and Bistre Parish Church, where he was married in 1929 to Miss Evelyn Bebbington of Buckley.

 

He was a trained singer (tenor) and a member of Buckley Glee Party and Buckley and District Male Voice Choir.

15th August 1921 - he enlisted with the Royal Corps of Signals until 1927.

 

Between 1927 and 1929 he was employed at the Elm Colliery, Hancock's Brickworks, Standard Brickworks, and John Summers' Steelworks.

 

He was called up for army service in 1939 (as he was a reservist) with the Royal Corps of Signals until 1945, when he returned to John Summers' Steelworks, where he was employed until his retirement in 1964. He was presented with a clock by Sir Geoffrey Summers.

 

They had two children, Cynthia and Malcolm, and three grandchildren, Andrew, Haydn and Sharon.

 

Mrs Bartley died in 1984 aged 86.

Mr Bartley died in 1991 aged 92.
