WALTER MILLWARD
Walter Millward is being presented with the Bevin Boy medal by Len Murray, Chairman of the Flintshire Branch of the National Association of Retired Police Officers. The location was Coed Duon Nursing Home Holywell in April 2008.
Born in 1925, Walter applied to join the Navy to coincide with his seventeenth birthday in June 1942 but was told he had to go down the mines; he protested but was told 'Someone had to do it'.
He trained for several weeks at Walkden Colliery in Manchester and then transferred to Llay Main Colliery near Wrexham which was roughly six miles away from his home in Drury, Buckley, Flintshire.
After five years down the mine and with the War over, Walter worked briefly at Charles Davison's Brickyard for a few months then joined Flintshire Constabulary on the 9th of January 1948. He enjoyed a successful career which saw him rise to the rank of Chief Inspector before his retirement on the 21st March 1978.
Following his retirement from the Police Service he worked for several years for a firm of local Solicitors in Shotton.
Walter is Ronnie Millward's younger brother.
