Samuel Jones"

1936

Samuel Jones worked twice during his working life in the potteries: at Lamb's Pottery in his youth, where he made the castle and at Taylor's Pottery later in life, where the group photo was taken (see 47.10). In between he worked at the Elm Colliery.

The exact dates of Samuel's birth and death are not known. He was from Bryn-y-Baal and used to play the organ for the Alltami chapel. He married Annie Elizabeth Wheelton of Rawtenstawl, Lancashire and had three daughters. Joe's late mother was born in 1913. They lived in Cherry Tree Cottage in Alltami. (See 2.20)

This photograph was taken on the one and only holiday of his life in the Isle of Man. Shortly after he had returned from this holiday, he went walking with a friend. He was found dead, leaning on a gate with his pipe still in his hand. He was a self-taught painter of oils and watercolours. He painted a watercolour of a bowl of Buckley pottery with pansies. He also reputedly finished an oil painting of Gladstone, but its existence and whereabouts remain a mystery.
