Jonathan Catherall's Bell Tower Memorial Tile Mould"

1980

I made the mould for the replacement tiles for the bell tower memorial in about 1980 in Catherall's Trap Brickworks new joiners' shop. (There should be a date on the mould). The idea was to replace the broken tiles. I was given a broken tile and I had to carve the mould from that. Jacky Wynne made the tiles using my mould. He was very adept at throwing the iron spots over the brick. You can see this at 3.403. It was a lot of work for the few tiles required.

After the mould was donated to the Museum service, I was asked to varnish it. Now in 2008, the whole memorial is to be removed and revamped with the latest lot of tiles replaced. However, the varnish will have to be removed from the mould for the clay to stick properly in the mould. (Oct 2008).
