CAPTION

'Out of this Clay'
In a long and useful life, no more valuable contribution to the common weal has been done by Dennis Griffiths of Buckley than through his book published this week, "Out of this Clay".
For this outstanding son of a town whose history is alive with character and individuality has reminisced with rare perception. No-one in Buckley today would deny his worth. Future generations will endorse their estimate no less emphatically for here in this ? book is the warp and weave of life which gave Buckley fame far beyond the bounds of its locality.
And happily the book arrived in Jubilee week - highlight of the Buckley year.
Foreward
In his foreword Mr Griffiths says the idea of writing an autobiography had not occurred to him. Insofar as the book is autobiographical it becomes necessarily so as a matter of convenience, " as a stream whose source derived from the reservoir of character and tradition, and contained in the way of life of my small town, being constantly refreshed by the tributaries which I have attempted to describe".
And fine descriptions there are too.
For a town like Buckley could never be summed up with importunity unless the writer were of Buckley stock. Who dare write of real characters such as "Sound Doctrine", "Little Jack", "Cossin Ned", "Dorrant", and "Q" unless they walked through his very life?
Great Names
He has much to say about the great names who brought renown in their wake. Jonathan Catherall, William Hopwood and others. And of all the exciting days of his youth when the young 20th century flexed its industrial muscles in this little town, where men of many different origins strove to win a hard living from its clay.
The book is published by Gees and sells at 13/6.
