This Church Hall occupies part of the site of the former St. Matthew's Junior School the foundation stone of which was laid in 1847 on land given by Sir Stephen Glynne of Hawarden Castle - "freely and voluntarily and without valuable consideration . . . for the purpose of the erection of a school for the education of children and adults, or children only, of the labouring, manufacturing and other poorer classes in the district, which school shall always be in union with and conducted upon the principles and in furtherance of the ends and designs of the Incorporated National Society for promoting the education of the poor in the principles of the Established Church of England."

With the closure of the school in 1963 and the transfer of the pupils to Mountain Lane County Primary School the conditions of the conveyance of the land were no longer maintained, and the site and its buildings reverted to the Hawarden Castle Estate and to Mr. C. A. Gladstone. In 1967, Mr. Gladstone emulating the generosity of his ancestor, Sir Stephen Glynne, gave back the site to the Parish of Buckley for the purpose of erecting a new Vicarage and a Church Hall.
