Frederick Birks was born on 16th August 1894 at this cottage.

 

On 29th August 1913, Frederick Birks emigrated to Australia and during the First World War was assigned to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. He served in the Gallipoli Campaign and his unit was incorporated into the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. His unit was then sent to Marseilles as part of the British Expeditionary Force, with Birks serving in the 6th Battalion of the Australian 1st Division. On 20th September 1917, Birks, by then a 2nd Lieutenant, led an attack on machine gun posts in Glengorse Wood, Ypres.

 

For this action he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Fredrick Birks was killed the following day attempting to dig men out following enemy shelling in the same area.

 

Frederick Birks VC is buried in Perth Cemetery (China Wall) near Ypres, Belgium.
