Margaret Hughes (nee Shone)

7.3.1834 - 1886

Baptised at St. Matthew's Church 30.3.1834

Margaret was the second child of John and Sarah Shone (nee Griffiths), her brother James being born in 1831. They lived in the Church Road area of Buckley. Sadly her mother died two months after giving birth to a second daughter, Charlotte. The baby did not survive either. Margaret was then only 3 years old.

The family must then have gone to live with relatives as the 1841 Census shows them living with William Shone, his wife Emma and children in Church Road.

By 1851 Margaret, now 17, is living in Lane End with her father and brother. Both are described as Brickyard Labourers but John is also named as a pauper.

The 1861 Census shows her still living in the Lane End but she is now married to Robert Hughes and has a young daughter, Sarah.

By 1871 she is a widow described as a pauper and living on The Mountain with 4 children, Jane and Mary (both 9 years), Daniel (7 years) and David (2 years).

In 1881 she is back in the Lane End in Garden Side living with her 2 sons, Daniel a brickworks labourer (17) and David (12) still at school.

Margaret died in 1886 and is buried with her husband in St. Matthew's Churchyard.

At the age of thirteen, she kept a notebook, which survives: "The Ladies' Forget-me-not" for 1835 with an almanack in which she had written, "Margaret Shone hur book. Gift of Mrs Evans Jones. April 1847 age 13. Now Lane, Bookley."
