Fellow Citizens of Buckley Urban District,

 

To celebrate the coronation of our beloved King and Queen, a specially convened meeting of the public was called in Nov. 1936.

 

There it was decided to proceed with arrangements for Coronation Festivities. For the past six months committees have frequently considered the best means of bringing to the mind of all, the significance of Coronation Day.

 

As a result the following programme of events has been issued. The proceedings on May 12th 1937 Coronation Day will be as follows and times will be kept as far as possible.

 

 

  1. Distribution of Souvenir Canisters of tea for old ladies over 65 years of age, and tobacco for old gentlemen over 65 years of age. These have been provided by the Coronation Committee as a memento of the occasion and will be distributed in the morning between 10am and 11.30am.
  2. Pupils of the Buckley Schools will assemble at their own schools where they will receive a Souvenir Coronation Medallion from Members of the Coronation Committee and under their Head Teachers will proceed to the Common Playing Field

 

1.30pm. General Assembly on the Common Playing Field. General Committee, Buckley Urban District Council and Officials, Magistrates, Doctors, Clergy, British Legion and Ex-Servicemen, Toc H, Blind V.A.D. Church Lads, Girl Guides, School Children headed by the Buckley Town Prize Band.

Vehicles will take their stand along the road from Hawkesbury to the Old Mountain Colliery in the following order:

 

Horse drawn Vehicles, Private Cars, Chamber of Trade Turn out, commercial Lorries at 1.30pm prompt.

1.45pm. CROWNING of the CORONATION QUEEN.

 

The Queen has been selected by ballot from the names of three Buckley pupils, one elected from each school, Miss Phyllis Lloyd, St Matthews, Miss June Dyment, Bistre N.P. Miss Mary Mullard, Buckley Council. The successful candidate was Miss Phyllis Llloyd, of St Matthews School.

 

The Crowning Ceremony will take place on a raised platform on the playing field. The Queen will be crowned by Mrs EPHRAIM H. JONES, the wife of the Chairman of the Buckley U.D.C.

 

The procession will be under the control of councillor GEORGE PETERS, [Chief Marshall] and his assistants.

2pm. The procession will move from the Common along the arranged route;- Mill Lane, The Cross, Stanley Road; turn and proceed along Mold Road, Brunswick Road, to the Cross Keys Lane End, turn and pass along Church Road to Liverpool Road Corner, then across the Common to the Playing Field.

4pm Tea.

1.Children will be conducted to their various schools for the tea provided by the Coronation Committee kindly served by the Head Teachers and the Staffs of the Schools.

 

Tea will be served in handsome Coronation beakers generously presented to all Buckley Schoolchildren by Councillor Ephraim H. Jones and Mrs Jones Hillside Mold Road, Buckley.

 

2.Knife and Fork tea for the Blind in the Parish Room. Invitations have been sent to all the blind welcoming them to a tea provided by the kind hospitality of two Councillors and members of the Coronation committee and their wives.

3.The British Legion are providing tea for the Ex-Servicemen in the Ex-Servicemen's Institute, Church Road.

 

4.The Coronation Committee have provided Tea for the Buckley Royal Town Band at the Ex-Servicemen's Institute.

 

5.The Church Lad's Brigade and the Girl Guides will have Tea by courtesy of their Officers.

 

After the Scholars have had Tea the Teachers will conduct them to the Buckley Town F.C. Brunswick Road, {kindly lent by Mr, Thomas Jones, and the Football Committee}

At intervals during the Sports Meeting displays of Dancing will be given by Miss C. KENDRICK of Chester, who has kindly given her services to the Coronation Committee.

8pm. Broadcast of KING'S SPEECH. GOD SAVE THE KING.

Chairman: Councillor EPHRAIM H. JONES, J.P. Chairman of the Council.

Speech by Dr. F. LLEWELLYN-JONES.

THOMAS JONES, Esq. Vice Chairman of Committee.

Community Singing led by Councillor DAVIES HAYES at intervals.

The prizes will be distributed at the conclusion of the Sports by Miss ADA

CATHERALL, the Lady Councillor of the U.D.C.

 

9.15pm. - Firework display on the Common, under the supervision of Messrs J.T. HOPWOOD and THOMAS GRIFFITHS.

 

10pm- Bonfire on the Metal Bank of the old Mountain Colliery, as a part of the chain of bonfires to be lighted throughout the country.

The Chairman of the Buckley Urban District Council will light the fire.

 

During the week the Council Chambers will be illuminated by the kind co-operation of the North Wales Power Company. The Cross, Lane End, Stanley Rd. will have coloured lights, and the U.D.C. have kindly provided bunting for the Liverpool Road corner.

 

Coronation Week will be a special Shopping Week in Buckley Area. Shops will be decorated and illuminated. Prizes are given for the following-

 

1- Best Decorated Shop. Grocery Section £1 10s

2- " Drapery & Boots £1 10s

3- " Sweets & Tobacco £1 10s

4- " Hardware or Wireless £1 10s

5- " Greengrocery £1 10s

6- " Dwelling House 12/6

 

Judging of the Shops will be carried out on Monday Evening, May 11th 1937.

An appeal is made to Householders, Shopkeepers and all Patriotic Citizens to Decorate, Illuminate or otherwise add to the general gaiety of the occasion.

The Committee & Officials wish to thank owners who have loaned horses and vehicles for the Procession.

 

Particularly they wish to thank the many friends who have contributed time and labour towards making this celebration a success, in particular the proprietors of the ALBERT HALL, TIVOLI, The PICTURE PALACE, CHORAL SOCIETY, and the PANTOMIME COMMITTEE.

 

The General Committee on behalf of the citizens of Buckley desire to express their grateful thanks for the gift of 1750 Tots for all Children by Mr & Mrs EPHRAIM HOPWOOD JONES, also to thank Councillors HAROLD STANLEY and JOHN THOMAS HOPWOOD for providing tea for the Blind.

 

It is the earnest request of the Committee that all owners of Cars and Lorries will decorate same in Coronation Colours and parade in the procession.
