Group of Teachers and ex Headmaster at the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Elfed High School"

Elfed High School, Mill Lane, Buckley

This is a Chester Chronicle photo.

The thirtieth anniversary of the Elfed School celebrations included visits by former staff and pupils. Leslie Mothersole was the first headmaster when it opened in 1954, with 425 pupils (who enrolled in the first two days) compared with about 1,050 in 1974. He remembers having to make do with cast-off books and old wood and iron desks; also the decision to have the uniform in grey and maroon.

One of the original teachers was still at the school - Mair Harrison, English teacher. Beatrice Barker, the senior mistress, returned for the occasion. Brenda Morris had retired the previous July as home economics teacher, another original member of staff.

They came to see an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia organised by Noel Kerfoot Owen, head of religious education, and Anne Squires, head of art. Part of it included the Chronicle account of the opening. It had cost £190,000 and was called The Elfed Secondary Modern School, with 15 staff and places for 630 pupils. The chairman of the governors was Dennis Griffiths and the vice-chairman was Edwin Humphreys who in 1974 was 91.
