THE VICAR'S LETTER

My Dear Friends and Parishioners,

The weather has had an exceptionally bad effect on our congregations and collections this month, as may be seen on another page. On Sunday, 19th January, attendance was so thin at 10.30 a.m. that with the exception of hymns, the service was said and the sermon omitted. Let us hope for a better record next month.

The pre-Lent dance this year has been granted to the Churchwardens in aid of the Renovation Fund. The debit balance of £90 on last year's account has been greatly reduced, but we should like to see it completely wiped out at Easter.

Lent comes in on February 26th. Rations will help us to keep it as regards physical abstinence. But the heart of Lent observance is contained in the words of Joel, the Epistle for Ash Wednesday, "Turn ye unto the Lord" - mourning, and fasting. The emphasis is on inward penitence. I hope that there will be a good response shewn by attending the special Lent services, which will be notified later.

We heartily congratulate Mr. John William Hughes on his marriage to Miss Madge Griffiths; and Miss Elizabeth Bellis, Drury, on her marriage to Mr. Glegg, of Caergwrle. They have been good church workers, and we wish them all happiness in their married life.

We also congratulate Mr. Frank Peters who was married on January 14th to Miss Dorothy Collins at West Kirby.

R.I.P. We deeply sympathise with Mrs. Humphreys, Park side, and her family, in their loss by the death of Noah Humphreys. He died suddenly on January 25th. He was an old chorister of St. Matthew's and a much respected citizen of Buckley.

St. Matthew's was, as usual, well represented in the excellent Pantomime or Revue, which maintained its usual high standard and perhaps even improved on it. Unfortunately the dreadful weather kept distant patrons away.

Your sincere Friend and Vicar,

W. J. Rees

C.L.B. AND GIRL GUIDES

C.L.B. and Girl Guides combined in arranging a dance at the Institute on Monday, January 19th. There was a fair attendance considering the weather. Part of the profits will be reserved for their own funds, but the bulk will be given to the Comforts Fund. We greatly appreciate their kind effort, and thank all who helped.

NEW YEAR'S EVE DANCE

The New Year's Eve Dance was very successful, financially and socially. A new and appropriate feature was the ringing in of the New Year with hand bells. The ringing of the church bells was forbidden by the military authorities, but the bell ringers did not allow the custom of the ringing in of the New Year to be broken, and so the happy idea of using the handbells was adopted. We thank all who helped by gifts or by work to make this evening so successful.

The Guild was pleased to welcome again its former President on January 2nd. Mr. Witton-Davies spoke about his work as Sub-Warden of St. Michael's College, Llandaff, and described the training of a priest not from the view point of the ordinand, but the trainer.

As I predicted in last month's notes, a Party did materialize on the 9th, thanks to the efficiency of our catering committee. The evening passed very pleasantly with games and dancing.

On the 16th, Mr. Ted Messham gave us a most entertaining description of the life in digs of a London University Student. The meeting on the 23rd saw us in a more serious mood, for we had decided to revise the personnel of our committee. The number was increased from six persons to eight, four boys and four girls. They have a task before them of arranging a Lent programme that will be both interesting and in conformity with the spirit of Lent. A Beetle Drive has been arranged for the 30th, and on February 6th, we hope to entertain a few soldiers from a nearby station.

It was decided at the General Meeting to make 15 the age limit for joining the Guild, this rule will be observed in future. - I.B.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The bad weather we have experienced this month has made our congregations considerably smaller. The Anniversary of the Church's opening was observed by a celebration of Holy Communion at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 26th. - I.B.
