DRAMA IN SCHOOL

Mr DENNIS GRIFFITHS was the adjudicator at the Elfed Secondary Modern School, Buckley, on Wednesday last week, when the inter-house drama festival was held. This year each house performed an excerpt from a Shakespearean play.

Cornwall chose Act 1 Scene 1 of Twelfth Night. Mr Griffiths praised the settings and lighting of this lively extract but felt that some entrances lacked assurance. He felt that the choice of the extract was not quite suitable.

Gloucester chose Act III Scene 1 of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The adjudicator thought this a good choice. The scenery and costumes presented a most pleasing picture. Bottom the Weaver played by Ian Thomas had a special word of praise.

Edinburgh performed the Trial Scene from the Merchant of Venice. Mr Griffiths commended the thoughtful details in setting and costumes. Movement and speech was purposeful. He praised Glyn Fisher's playing of Shylock, and said this was a real example of children playing Shakespeare and enjoying it.

Kent played Act V Scenes III and IV from King Henry IV Part I. The adjudicator praised the handling of the Prologue. He thought this a suitable excerpt. Although a little unbalanced at times the production showed sound understanding of the requirements. There was a good idea of phrasing and the essential word was always well pointed.

The final placing of the Houses was: 1, Edinburgh; equal 2^nd,, Kent and Gloucester; 3^rd, Cornwall.
