1950
I attended Lane End Infants School from the age of about three and a half to five and a half. While I was there I was taught what we used to call "double writing", using a fountain pen. We had an inkwell in the desk. We were also taught long division.
I then moved to Ellesmere Port and remember being very upset when I was presented with a pencil to write with! The education I received at the school was excellent.
I remember the toilet block, which had a back door leading into a corridor with four or five doors. Inside there was a long plank with holes in, dropping down to a tub, the contents of which were treated with lime (they never smelled, anyway!). Once a week the tub was emptied.
