Sarah and Joseph Messham"

Some of those named appear on the archive.

 

Joseph Messham (1845 - 1.5.1927) had red hair and one eye. He was 82 when he died.

Sarah, nee Hewitt, was from Stoneyhill, Dobshill. (1849 - 22.6.1916). She was 67 when she died.

 

They had twelve children.

  1. Mary m. Tom Shawcroft. They lived in Bank Lane Drury and had no children.

 

  1. John (1873 - 1965) m. Jane (1875 - 26.1.1935). They lived in 5, Park Road and had six children: Arthur (father of Eleri Barclay), Fred, John, Esther, Ethel (daughter Gwyneth), Doris (daughter Ina).

 

  1. Jane m. Herbert Birtwistle. They had five sons, one of whom is Frank, and two daughters.

 

  1. Joseph m. Jessie, who was Scottish. They had two sons and went to Canada.

 

  1. Hannah, who was very tall, m. Jonas Hird who was a horsedrawn tram driver in Rochdale. They had two sons and one daughter who was a friend of Gracie Fields.

 

  1. Kate, who had red hair m. a gardener from Middlewood Nocturnum, Birkenhead. She died in her 40s. They had one daughter, Mary.

 

  1. Fred m. ? Went to Nottingham and had four children

 

  1. Enoch, who also had red hair. He was the captain of Saint Matthew's Bell Ringers. M. Annie Roberts from Lane End. They had a daughter, Clara, who taught at the Buckley Board School ( Eleri Barclay remembers being taught by her in 1948); and a son called Edward - Ted who became the President of the Buckley Society.

 

  1. Esther m. Johnny Edwards, Smithy, Tram Road. They had six sons: Arthur, Frank, Herbert, John, ??; and a daughter, Edith.

 

  1. Ada m. Ambrose Williams, Frith. They had two sons: Jack and Herbert.

 

  1. Edward b. 1889 m. Bessie Jones, Mount Pleasant. They had one son, Edward Cecil, known as Cecil, b. 1920 who did not marry and who died in the early 2000s.

 

  1. Arthur m. Annie (?) from the Warren. John named his first son after him. They had three daughters: Sarah, Christine (Tina) and Eileen and one son, Arthur.
