One of the Castle Fire Brick Company Sentinel Model S4 Waggons at the start of its restoration"

19 March 2005

This vehicle was being restored from March 2005, though not locally. Its number is UJ 9497.

I have just recently (19th March 2005) bought the later one of the two UJ 9497, bought by Castle Fire Brick Co. directly from the Sentinel works in 1937. The other sentinel is BEV 466 and I thought that and another waggon BEV465? were both bought second hand from Brown and Son, Chelmsford. I believe all three waggons were bought from Castle Fire Brick in 1955 by Richard (Dick) Woolley. They were sold on to private owners and all three still survive. All but UJ9497 are on the rally scene. One is based in Berkshire and the other in Bristol. We hope to restore ours this summer (2005) and have it running early next year. We have already found the original paint hidden under the maroon it is currently painted in.

I would estimate that a Sentinel could pull 50-60 tons mamimum on a level road. The engine is rated at 120BHP.

The Castle Fire Brick Co Ltd had eight Sentinels and three trailers.

DM 6070, a DG6 - no longer in existence

BEV 466, an S4 (1934 shaft drive four-wheeler) - privately owned

BEV 467 " " - "

UJ 9497, an S4 built new 1937 - "
