Grandstand Public House, Burntwood, Buckley

1928

A very similar photo appears in "The Archive Photographs Series, Bwcle, Buckley" by Paul F. Mason, Flintshire Record Office, p.122. There are some differences. For example, the downstairs window is cut off. Yet a third version of this group exists with the window in but the figures in the window missing.

The donor of our photo attributes the location to the Black Lion pub. The book states the location is The Grandstand Inn, Burntwood, 1928 - 9 season. Mr Richard Catherall states that the location is The Grandstand. Thomas John Catherall is Richard's father.

The book gives the following names, some of which contradict our information.

From left:

Back Row: John Lewis, Thomas John Catherall, Tommy Griffiths

Middle Row: Jim Kelly, Edward Griffiths, Peter Iball, ? Wyatt, Tom Jenkins, R. Shone, Bert Parry, Jack

Kelly

Front Row: Cyril Shone, Jim Harold Hughes, John Bevan, ?, J. Kelsall, Harold Thornton.

********

A family member confirms that Joseph Herbert Shepherd is correct ( middle row, second from left).

The same person confirms Edward Peters as fourth from left, middle row. He was killed while riding his bike down by the station, aged 28.
