Ice Breaker. At about 5pm on Sunday 5th February, I was walking along the top path of the Trap Pool when I saw a lone Swan on the water breaking a channel in the ice by heaving its body weight on to the ice and breaking it with its weight. The ice of the previous few days had thawed to the extent that it was becoming easier to break through but there were stretches of exposed water near the edge so I wondered why it was doing this. Two years ago a pair of Swans had laid six eggs at the trap after an absence of about thirty years, or so I'm told. Five of the eggs hatched but sadly none survived beyond the summer. Last year, eggs were laid again in the same place but they were destroyed. Early this year a single Swan only appeared: it was this one which was so intent on making a channel in the ice. After returning a short while later with my camera, I found it at the edge of the pool seemingly looking for food. I took some photos and fed it and the ducks with some bread I had brought.
