Bessie and Alf Burt outside The Square Chip Shop"

Stanley Road, Buckley

1965

The building tomthe left was the Square Post Office

Mrs Burt was my aunt. They ran the chip shop from the mid 1930s to the late 1960s. Her favourite colour was maroon, as you can see!

I went there to my cousin, Beryl's birthday party when I was about six, wearing a new blue pleated skirt which I was ordered not to get dirty. Earlier, my uncle had painted the place with a new coat of maroon, which I managed to get all over the skirt. I can remember getting the blame for this!

Mrs Burt lived until she was about 94.

The premises was a labyrinth of passages, steps and nooks and crannies. The shop was demolished to build bungalows and she went to live in one of them.
