William Weigh, the Oldest Man in Buckley, who died aged 93"

He was related in some way to George Weigh who ran Level Farm, Wood Lane which was owned by George's father, Joseph Weigh (see 170.1). The farm was bought from the Gladstone estate, probably to cover death duties.

 

NEWSPAPER ACCOUNT OF WILLIAM WEIGH'S FUNERAL

 

The funeral took place at the Bistre Parish Church, on Monday, of Mr. William Weigh, of 52, Nant Mawr. He was the oldest male inhabitant of Buckley, being a native of Nant Mawr, where he was born 93 years ago. He had lived in Buckley all his life, and in the house where he died for 76 years. He had been married three times. Some 43 years ago Mr. Weigh was run over at the Buckley branch railway line near the Knowle, and lost a leg through the accident. At that time he was engaged by the firm of Messrs. C. Davison and Co., Ltd.

 

He recovered and was fitted with an artificial limb. Afterwards he worked at the yard of the South Buckley Rock Brickworks, and was there until the firm closed down. During the war he worked with a horse and cart.

 

In his young days he was a local preacher with the Primitive Methodists, and a member of the choir. Latterly he had been a worshipper at the Bistre Parish Church. He died on Thursday after only six days' illness.

 

Mr. Weigh was one of the oldest members of the Druids' Friendly Society, and had passed through the chairs of both Hawarden and Buckley Good Samaritan Lodges.

 

At the funeral members of the Druids headed the procession. The Rev. A. W. Rees, M. A. (vicar) officiated.…….

Duckworth, Mr C. Duckworth, Mr R. Duckworth (grandchildren); Mrs Williams, Mrs C. Wainwright, Mrs W. Wainwright, and Miss J. Weigh, Ewloe; Miss J. Hill, Mrs Jno. Hill, and Miss B. Ellis, Buckley (nieces); Mr Dutton (Liverpool), Capt. T. Hill (Liverpool), step brother, was represented.
