When the skateboard was installed at Hawkesbury in 2005, a high wooden fence was built at the back of it, next to the bell tower plaque. The plaque by this time was in a state of disrepair.

In early 2006 a petition signed by over 120 people was delivered to the Buckley Town Council concerning the state of the memorial.
