Buckley Urban District Council Food Control Committee"

Buckley Town Council, and Old Library and Baths, Mold Road, Buckley

1920

NB. An original copy states:

Buckley Urban District Food Control Committee 1917- 1920

see "Bwcle- Buckley", the Archive Photograph series by Paul Mason, Flintshire Record Office. p.106

The entry in the book gives the date of the committee as 1917 - 20. Alfred Betney is wrongly attributed in the book as W. Betney ( information provided by Alfred's grandson, Robert Betney).

The committee included four of the fifteen councillors who were elected in 1897 to the first Buckley Urban District Council, viz.: Edwards Roberts, James Lamb, William Rowlands, and Jonathan Catherall.

(p.107): Jonathan Catherall belonged to one of the oldest Buckley families and was a direct decendant of an earlier Jonathan Catherall who started the fire-brick industry in Buckley in 1737. At the time of his death he was known as the "father of Buckley UDC", having served on the Council with an unbroken record for 34 years. He was a man of few words, but when he did speak, his views always carried weight. Jonathan Catherall was an alderman of Flintshire County Council, JP for Flintshire and chairman of the local bench of magistrates, member of Mold School Board, and governor of Hawarden County School. He served for over thirty years on the Hawarden Board of Guardians and afterwards on the Public Assistance Committee. A keen business man, he was director of Hawarden & District Waterworks, and, for 46 years, secretary of Buckley Collieries Co. Ltd. In politics, he was an ardent Liberal and, in religion, a strong nonconformist.
