Notes of the Month

Lent. - It was an unfortunate beginning to Lent this year, with Influenza rampant and the Schools closed, and the weather so bad, people could not get to the

Services. And on the two Tuesdays our special preacher was unable to fulfil his promise, the first time the Vicar stopped him on account of the weather, and

the next time he was laid by with the Influenza. The Rector of Hawarden has very kindly come to preach to us on three Tuesdays. And on Sundays too the

congregations have been poor, and the smell of gas has been most unpleasant, so with one thing and another we have had something to contend with. Happily

the sickness is now abating, and we are looking forward to brighter days.

The Easter Vestry will be held as usual, on the Tuesday in Easter week, at 7 o'clock. It is always good to see the Vestry Meeting well attended, for by our

presence there we show an interest in the affairs of our Parish Church.

The Recreation Society. - There is every prospect of a strong membership this coming season, now that we have so many of our sailors and soldiers home

again. The Society are spending £10 upon the bowling green, it had sunk in several places, and they have been fortunate in obtaining the services of the man

who laid the green in the first instance. If the green is well cared for it should prove second to none in the district. The Society hopes to open on the 1st May.

Will all intending subscribers kindly let the Secretary have their subscriptions as early as possible?

The Buckley U.D.C. Elections. - Great interest has been shewn in the election. In these days of progress many have felt dissatisfied with the record of the

old Council, and so were anxious to see some new life infused into it. Only four members of the old Council have been returned. It now remains to be seen

whether the new council will be able to accomplish all we are hoping for.

We hope that when they get to work they will lose no time in establishing an Infant Welfare Centre, and setting on foot a sound system of Sanitation.

The Influenza Epidemic has shewn the need of a Health visitor for the whole district. Few people realise how the District Nurse is bound by the rules of the

Central Midwives' Board, by which she is forbidden to attend any case of infection, or to lay out a dead body, except in the case of a patient (being a

Maternity case) whom she had been attending at the time of death. Pneumonia has now been made a Notifiable Disease, and consequently Nurse is obliged to

refuse to attend such cases. All will understand how hard it often is for Nurse to have to refuse to attend cases, when asked to do. Nurse Kemp is continually

on the go night and day in all weathers, and it is not possible for her to undertake more than she is doing, therefore we hope a Health Visitor may be found for

the whole district, who will be able to attend cases which the District Nurse cannot attend.

More War Honours. - All will be interested to know that in the despatch from the Salonica Front the Rev. Colonel D. R. Pelly, C.F., and Lieut. H. E.

Simmons were both mentioned. It is much to the credit of Lieut. Simmons that, having been awarded the M.C. for his work in the Infantry, he should now

be honourably mentioned for his services in the Air Force. We hope we may soon see him home.

The C.E.M.S. - many will be interested to see the balance Sheet showing the account of the expenditure in connection with the Welcome Home to our sailors

and soldiers. We are most grateful to the Secretary for the business-like way in which he has carried it all out.

It has been decided that we shall not hold any Meetings during the summer months. We are looking forward to making a good start again in September.
