6. After he had spent 1s. 5d., a boy still had left a penny more than 4/7 of the money he had at first. How much had he at first?

 

7.A bucket half full of water weighs 15 lbs. The same bucket a quarter full weighs 10 lbs. Find the weight of the bucket, and also the weight of the water which it will hold when full.

 

8.The total cost of a coat, hat, and umbrella is £6. The coat and hat alone cost £5. 10s. The hat and umbrella alone cost £1. 16s. Find the cost of each article.

 

9.A careless boy multiplied a sum of money by 3 and divided his answer by 17 instead of dividing by 3 and multiplying by 17. He got an answer of £51, which was wrong. Find the correct answer.

 

 

10. A farmer this year lost one out of every six lambs born; 235 lived; how many died?

 

11. Divide the product of x2 - 4 and x2 - 4x by x2 +2x.

 

12. Solve 7x - {4x - 1 - (6x + 4)} =2 [5x-(3x+2)].

 

13.A fish is 15 inches long. Its head is equal in length to its tail. Its body is 3 times the length of the head and tail together. What is the length of the head?

1.Write a short account of the way Mungo Park met his death. When and where was he born? What good did he do? What do you think of the Moors?

 

2.Write an account of any striking customs of some of the black tribes of the interior of Africa. Give an account of Demba, and also of the danger Mungo ran of having his eyes put out. How did he escape this dreadful torture?

 

3.Form sentences containing these words: degrading insolence; perplexity; resentment; exceedingly suspicious; cowries; tornadoes; harmattan.

 

4. How did the Slatees treat the woman slave Nealee when she complained of pains in her legs?

1. Account for the springs of water which often gush out of the side of a hill.

 

2. What is dew? Whence does it come? At what season of the year and on what sort of nights is it most abundant?

 

3. Describe the spawn of a common frog. Give as full an account as you can of the appearance, habits, and growth of the tadpoles from the time when they hatch from the egg until they become little frogs.

 

4. Give the names of birds that are here only in the summer. State (1) how you know these birds, (2) the food they eat, (3) the kind of place in which they build their nests and the appearance of the nest and eggs.

 

5. If you were given a mixture of salt, sand, and fine iron filings, how would you separate the three different materials from one another?

 

6. Name six different plants which you have seen blossoming this Spring or. Summer; state the kind of place in which each grows, the height of the plant, and the colour of the flower.

 

7. Make drawings of the flowers and leaves (if you can) of the following:-dandelion, primrose, dog-rose. In what kind of a place does each grow?

 

8. Write the life history of a butterfly.

 

9. Give as accurately as you can the time (name the month or months) when-(a) the swallows arrive and depart, (b) the cuckoo appears, (c) early potatoes are set, (d) the hawthorn blooms, (e) farmers gather the hay harvest, (/) strawberries ripen.

 

10. How would you proceed to restore a person who has narrowly escaped being drowned?

13. Baby stands in front of the fire to warm and its flannel night-dress catches fire. What would you do? What do you think of flannelette?
