Dear Mrs Hill

Here are just a few lines in answer to your very welcome letter which I received yesterday. It has been in the ? a long time but I didn't receive it until late last night. I hope you will excuse this pencil as my pen is still in repair.

Well, Mrs Hill, I don't know what you have to thank me for, as I only did what anyone would have done if it were possible for them to do. I'm sorry I couldn't get you a photo of the grave. It would have helped a little. It is a very nice place where it lies. In fact, Mrs Hill, I think it is one of the nicest places I have seen in Italy.

It's funny we never met one another as I'm sure we couldn't have been very far away. The only time I ever met anyone from Buckley was when I first landed in Africa. Well, Mrs Hill, let me thank you for your offer to get me anything I want. It is very good of you, but I don't think there is anything that I am really short of, as we can get nearly anything out here (at a big price). The thing I want most is to get home but when that will be I don't know, but until I do here's wishing you all the very best.

Yours sincerely

W. Evans
