Contraction Rulers used at Hanson's Lane End Brickworks"

Lane End Brickworks, Buckley

1970

These contraction rulers were used at Hansons' Brickworks to measure the correct length of unfired clay before dividing into bricks and being fired. Each one was used for different types of clay because the contraction rate varied with the clay type and quality. Look carefully and you can see that some are more worn through use than others. This was because some clays mixes were only very infrequently used.
