LICENCES FOR THE TIVOLI AND THE PALACE CINEMAS

1938 - 1950

The following transcriptions are taken from the Buckley Urban District Council's Cinematograph Act 1909 Licensing Book. The book contains counterfoils from 1936 to 1950 for both The Tivoli and The Palace. Also in the book, was a completed Licence and counterfoil for the Palace, the details of which are transcribed below as an example. There are twenty more licences in the book: why did the records end in 1950 and why was the completed 1951 licence not issued to the Palace?

1937 - Thomas Cumming

1938 - 1939 - Joseph Whitehead Wright, Shotton

1940 - 1943 - Roberta Olive (or Oliva) Lewis, 46, Mill Lane, Buckley

amended on July 23rd 1940 from David William Lewis

1944 - 1945 - Rhoda Oliva Lewis, Richmond House, Brunswick Road

amended on 13th August 1945 to David Williams Lewis

LICENCE TEXT

 

CINEMATOGRAPH ACT 1909

Licence where Enclosure Permanent

 

The Buckley Urban District Council

being the Licensing Authority under the above-mentioned

Act hereby grant unto E. F. Jervis Esquire

of Edensor, Brunswick Road, Buckley this Licence authorising

him to use the building and premises known as The Palace Cinema

situated at Chester Road, Buckley in the said

Urban District for the purpose of an exhibition of pictures or other optical

effects by means of a Cinematograph, or other similar apparatus,

for the purpose of which

inflammable films are used, subject to the regulations for the time being of the Secretary of State

made under the said Act and to the conditions and regulations endorsed hereon.

 

This Licence shall be in force from the first day of January 1951, until the thirty first day of December 1951.

 

This Licence will be suspended by the Licensing Authority in the event of the Licensee failing to carry out the Regulations of the Secretary of Sate or of the building becoming otherwise unsafe or of any material alteration being made in the building or enclosure without the sanction of the licensing Authority.
