POSTER TEXT

TO THE ELECTORS

OF

BUCKLEY URBAN DISTRICT

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN

Having been nominated as a candidate at the forthcoming election, I beg to offer my services in the interests of the ratepayers generally.

I must admit to you plainly that I am not in favour of excessive expenditure in the Sewering of this district, but believe in a scheme that will be neither extreme nor too expensive, so that employer and employee will be able to pay without unnecessary hardship.

I consider that £10,000 is by far too much to spend on a district like Buckley, composed entirely of working men, and as you will have to pay the cost, I say be careful before it is too late. If this scheme is carried out, you must of a consequence expect lower wages and higher rents, which in my opinion will be nothing short of a calamity, only to be known when too late.

This work ought to be done for one-third of the above, and could be done by Buckley men, without paying 8 guineas per day for an engineer and at least 3 pounds per week for a clerk of works. This amount alone with the commission on the £10,000 ought to be sufficient to do almost the whole work, and I ask my fellow working-men to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest this matter for themselves, and vote only for those men who will give the matter further deliberation and consideration before committing themselves to such extravagance, and who will do their endeavour to rescind such (to my mind) an obnoxious resolution.

If elected, I will do my earnest endeavour to secure this end, and any other business coming before the Council will always command my ablest, careful, and undivided attention.

Believe me

Ladies and Gentlemen

Your humble servant,

JOHN JONES.
