Joseph William Hughes, known to everybody as Joe Back, and his wife, Alice Ann, with daughter, Beryl, lived at 9, Aberdovey Terrace, Lane End, which was demolished in 1962.
Joe was called up into the Royal Artillery and was transferred to the DEMS, the First Regiment Maritime Royal Artillery, and served as a gunner when guns were first fitted to cargo ships in WWII to enable these ships to have a little self-defence whilst in convoys supplying Britain in the War.
