The following year he received another book with the same certificate, dated March 25th 1906, for 97 marks.

The book was: Bertie Clifton, A Story by Evelyn Everett-Green.

The first few lines of the novel:

" I say, Ethel, such a horrid shame."

"Well, Paul, what is it?"

"Do you remember my telling you of a little chap at school called Bertie Clifton?"

"Yes, I think I do. He came last half, didn't he? He's the little delicate-looking boy who sits by the pillar in church."

"Yes, that's the little chap. Well, I'm most awfully sorry for him, for I believe he's getting tremendously bullied by some of those brutes of big boys, and I don't see what I can do about it."

On April 7th 1907, he attained 92 marks and received Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
