Jonathan Catherall's belfry at Hawkesbury"

Hawkesbury Garden, Mill Lane, Buckley

1952

The belfry was built by Jonathan Catherall II near to his home at Hawkesbury Hall c. 1813. He was forbidden to build one on his chapel by the Rector of Hawarden among others on the grounds that it would emulate that of the parish church.

The belfry was demolished in August 1952 as part of the site clearance for the Elfed High School. Many Buckley people thought it should remain as a monument and objected to its destruction. A plaque now marks the spot (2005).

In the background, scaffolding can be seen against the school building.
