RECENT FIELDWORK IN THE BUCKLEY POTTERIES - (132.1)
The article contains a drawing of each of the nineteen potteries and a decription, plus various other images. These are entered separately under 132. 2 - 27.
SITE I5. SJ276450
Powell's Pottery - late nineteenth century. Although the pottery is a comparatively late one, the site is an early enclosure in the middle of the common. It is now occupied by the industrial complex of Wolsey Holdings Limited and James Lithgow (UK) Limited. Although no trace of the kilns survives, they are probably under the concrete yard. The drying sheds have been incorporated into the modern complex. The dump has been almost completely removed. No finds come from the site itself although many stamped and signed pieces are in private collections in the area (Davey, 1975b, 55-67).
Among the papers of a Wrexham solicitor recently deposited in the Clwyd County Record Office is a letter accompanied by a photograph from I. & W. Powell, Ewloe Pottery, dated 24 August, 1923. The letter reads as follows:-
Dear Sir,
We received your letter this morning - The Balance of the account due to Messrs McIntyre & Co. would have been settled before now only trade has been so bad and accounts difficult to collect -
We are about to form a company at our Ruabon Works for development of certain branches of the Clay Industries - and which are badly needed in the district and would eventually find employment for a considerable number of men who are now on the unemployment lists. The account referred to above shall receive our best intention.
Yours truly
I. W. Powell
This, together with the photograph, which shows around forty art and souvenir pots produced by Powells, gives an insight into the efforts they made to remain financially viable in a period of general economic depression.
