In August 2005 the co-operative was taken over from the West Midlands Co-operative Society by the Co-operative Group, based in Manchester and running 1,700 nationwide shops. At the time of the takeover, it was announced that the premises would be revamped at a cost of £350,000 with no date set for the work to begin.
In April 2008, it was announced that the open-air market would be re-launched at Brunswick Road car park: it would run throughout the year on the third Monday of the month.
