(On an unnumbered last page is the following:)
A letter to his great grand-daughter:
Dearest Jennifer
And so you have arrived. It was good of you to come so punctually, and I hope you are not disappointed with the little planet where we live. You will have to train your parents to behave properly towards you. Be patient with them - they are quite inexperienced. If you have any grievances, tell your grandma - she will put them right - but don't let her spoil you. We want you to be very happy, and the way to be happy is to make others happy. I fear it will be some time before we can see you, so you can grow quietly till we come.
Grandpa.
And another one sent on her second birthday a few months before he died:
Dearest Jennifer
I understand that you are going in for the dangerous custom of having birthdays. As you get older you will not like them coming so often.
However, at present many very happy returns and there is something for you to buy a motor car.
We send our dearest love to you and all -
GT. Gd. Pa.
