In 1931, Robin's father decided to sell up and he bought Smithy Farm , Padeswood, a twelve acre small-holding. He was 60 years old! Robin was by then driving a lorry for Thompson's. Miriam married John Probert, Blackbrook, and they would help with the hay. In Smithy Farm, they kept pigs and had some unhappy experiences with them. Robin didn't like the life much; he said that it was always haymaking time at Bank Holidays when he wanted to be out with his pals.
