The black door, left front, used to close off the left-hand stairway to the upper floor of the library building. The slipper baths (for use by those with no bath at home) were in the main baths building near to the current pay booth. There were several cubicles each with a bath with open taps. The baths superintendant gave you the top to the tap to turn it on and off. It cost 6d. (2 1/2 pence). Towels were available for hire, as were swimming costumes for the pool. You had to take your own soap. The superintendant cleaned the baths out afterwards.
