Alwyn Dempster Jones lectures at a Buckley Art Society meeting"

29 January 1993

FRIDAY 29th JANUARY, 1993

At Friday the 29th of January's meeting of the Buckley and Mold Art Society, the guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Alwyn Dempster Jones B.A. of Mynedd Isa. Alwyn who studied at Flintshire School of Art, Manchester College of Art and Cardiff University, began his evening with an illustrated history of his work from his early student days to the present using slides and giving members an opportunity to see the progression of his work, beginning with pen drawings of Manchester and Rhyl, working through to gouaches and ink work of Buckley to acrylic and pastels. He spoke and illustrated well of his inspirations being the high places of Snowdonia, voicing his preference for the pastel medium because it was the one medium that could comfortably be carried into difficult areas of mountainous country and be workable with comfort and ease in the changeable weather conditions. Alwyn's work has been exhibited at Theatre Clwyd and at the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art and hangs in many public and private collections throughout Great Britain and abroad. He was thanked by the Society's Treasurer Mrs Pamela Townsend. The Society this week mourned the loss of member, Mr. Ken Howard of Mynydd Isa, who passed away on Thursday 21st of January after a heart attack in the Lake District. He once said "Watercolour's beauty lies in being just a transparent stain on the paper". Members Mike Ford and John Edwards represented the Art Society at the funeral on Friday 29th of January 1993. The next meeting will be on February 5th at the Elfed School art department and the subject will be "Practical Still Life". Members present at tonight's meeting were: Pam Townsend, Jean Chesters, Joe Chesters, Ian McFarlane, Steward McFarlane, Rhona Owens, Andrew Warr, Mike Porter, Mike Coleclough, Alf Hughes, Iolanthe Read and Warwick Armstrong.
