Herbert Parker"

1991

FROM "SOC:FORUM" Number 3. 1996.

"Some members will, I have no doubt, heard the news of the death of Mr Herbert Parker, F.R.S.A. of Llanferres near Mold.

Herbert or Bert as he was affectionately called was a founder member of the first Buckley Art Club, a forerunner of our present-day group, in 1945.

He was born and bred in Church Road, Buckley, a strong cricketer and a fine watercolour artist whose work has been hung in many local, national and international exhibitions: The Royal Watercolour Society, The Royal Cambrian Academy of Art and The Society of French Artists (The Paris Salon), of which he was an associate member.

A founder member of the Clwydian Art Society, Ruthin, he was its president until his passing - a group with which he will always be associated with as well as Buckley and Mold Art Society with whom he spent many an evening.

A PAINTING TRIP

(A tale as related to the author by Mr. Herbert Parker)

On one of the many occasions I spent sketching with Mr. Herbert Parker one incident stands out. I had called on him at his home in Llanferes all packed ready for a full day in Cilcain. Before we left his home he said. "This reminds me of one particular day I had arranged to go out with an Austrian artist friend by the name of Krammer. I was already packed, had been since breakfast, so all I had to do was pick everything up and go. Krammer called and with the car more easily accessible from the rear of the house we left through the kitchen and the rear garden"

Herbert related next the very thing I was taught early on in my artistic life. He went on:- "I closed the door after us and led the way down the path when all of a sudden Mr. Krammer called out "Mr. Parker, I have found a wonderful subject" and of course for a short moment I wondered where I would be driving us to. I turned and saw him setting up his stool and easel amid my vegetables. "This cabbage patch makes a beautiful subject," he said, just look at those beautiful blues and greens. The point was made. You don't have to go beyond your own backyard to find an interesting subject, so, I unpacked and with full lunch flask and painting gear, I spent a day's painting in my own garden. I just goes to show.
