see 7.2 for more information on the connection between Eric Hayes' family and the Horse and Jockey
The previous Horse and Jockey pub, with the long association to my father, Joshua Hayes' family was a little nearer Lane End. It was an L-shaped building and stood back from Church Road. The nearest part to the Church is now a pet shop (2.2004) and the rest of the Inn, which was converted into cottages, has very recently been demolished and two new buildings, much closer to the road, have been built in the space of the original L-shape.
Balshaw's bakery was situated on Knowle Lane (1940s, 1950s and perhaps into the 1960s). Alfred Balshaw's son was taken over by his son, William (Billy).
