Saint Matthew's School Boys Department with Joseph Tyson"

Saint Matthew's School, Church Road, Buckley

1883

My husband's father, Robert Roberts, is 6th from the left in the second row. He had curly dark ginger hair. He was born in Ruthin in July 1869 and this is the top class, so the photo was taken in 1883 when he was 13/14.

His father was a farmer who was bitten by a rat on his cheek and who died almost immediately. The mother left Ruthin with Margaret,10 years, Tom, 9, Robert, 7 and Mary who was 5, and returned to Buckley to her mother. The children were educated then at Saint Matthew's School with Mr Tyson as headmaster. Robert married Eva Saddler in Cardiff in 1907. Eva was born October 1883. They are both buried at Bistre Churchyard.
