Buckley Mayor John Thornton officially switched on the Christmas lights outside the Buckley Town Council offices. The lights had been extended down Lane End and these were switched on at the same time. The event had been specially organised for the children. A roundabout for small children and a stand with old fashioned slot machines were at the side of the council building. The Royal Buckley Town Band played carols.

Mr Thornton was also mayor in 2008/9, his third term at the age of 85. In September 2008, he was presented with an award for being selected as Flintshire's Volunteer of the Year. He was nominated by the Flintshire Over 50s Forum. He had been involved in community work for 44 years.
